Hello again from Meghan at Vestal's 21st Century Classroom! I don't know about you, but I love finding technology that makes my life simpler. If you're like me, I can't wait for you to find out about the app that will save you time as a Virginia teacher!

How many times have you been in a situation and needed to quickly look up information about the Standards of Learning (SOLs)? Maybe you have been sitting in a faculty meeting, writing lesson plans, or want to look up the SOLs from the previous grade level to see what your students should have already been taught. For example, I know Math SOL 5.8 has to do with measurement (customary and metric) and asks students to find area, perimeter, and volume.  But, I cannot remember the exact specifications for all five substrands from year-to-year. I have wasted so much time while lesson planning, waiting for the Virginia Department of Education website to load so that I can look up something having to do with the SOLs.

Recently, I found a FREE app that has helped save time: "The Virginia Standards of Learning" app created by Mastery Connect! The app is pretty basic but puts all the Virginia SOLs at your fingertips, easily accessible whenever they are needed. The app was first released in June 2014 but the developers are regularly releasing updates to keep it running smoothly and up to date with the latest standards. Currently, the app is available for Apple and Android devices, although you need a device with iOS 7.0 or later if it is downloaded on an Apple device.

The app is simple and easy to use. Upon opening, you can select one of the four main content areas to examine: mathematics, language arts, history/social studies, or science. A feature that I like is the search bar because it allows you to look up every SOL that has to do with a certain skill at one time.  For example, I teach 5th grade and I like to have an idea of what my students should already know and what they will learn in 6th grade. If I want to see what my students should have learned about fractions in grades K-4 and what they will learn about fractions in 6th grade, all I have to do is type "fractions" into the search bar. Every SOL that has anything to do with fractions will appear.

If you look up the SOLs by content area, rather than using the search bar, the SOLs will then be broken down by grade level and then specific SOL. By tapping on the specific strand, you will be able to see the entire SOL.

The one downside to the Virginia Standards of Learning app is it does not include the framework.  But, there is a place where you can type in notes and ideas with each strand.  The app will save those notes so that you can access those anytime.

Ready to download The Virginia Standards of Learning app to your mobile device!? Just type "Virginia Standards of Learning" into the search bar in your app store. It should be the first app to appear and it can be downloaded for FREE!

The Virginia Standards of Learning app is particularly helpful during faculty meetings, PLCs, and lesson planning. I also recommend making parents aware of this app. Providing them with easy access to the SOLs means it is more likely they will actually take the time to know what their child is expected to ascertain throughout the year and will help them achieve those goals.
