Virginia is for Authors: Kim Norman

We all know that Virginia has talent, but I wanted to highlight a few amazing Virginia authors that you may or may not know. This will be the beginning of the series, and I'm so excited to share them with you!

I came across Kim Norman's name about four years ago when I was looking for a local author to come and speak to our school. She is from Smithfield, VA, and her most popular book is one that our early elementary teachers may recognize from Scholastic (I know I've seen it featured a few times): Ten on a Sled. It's a cute story similar to Five Little Monkeys. As the friends continue to sled, they start falling off one by one.

In I Know a Wee Piggy, a little pig breaks loose at the county fair and ends up covered in all kinds of colors from his adventure. The pictures are beautiful, it's great for teaching colors, and even older children will enjoy seeing what kind of mess he will get into next.
My personal favorite is one that I bought for my son. Crocodaddy is just what the name suggests. A little boy is playing with his father in a lake, and the dad pretends to be a crocodile. The boy and dad enjoy role-playing, and it warms my heart to listen to my husband read this to our oldest son at night.

The books are geared toward younger readers, but I will say that even my fifth grade students were excited to meet Ms. Norman, and she gave a lot of great pointers on being an author and all that entails. Her school visits are very interactive, and she is super sweet! You can read more about my experience with her author visit on my blog here.

For now, I hope you have a restful LONG weekend, and keep praying for snow (but not until Tuesday)!
