Back to School Read Alouds

I have already been back for my first teacher workday. I can't believe my summer is over! But after our first meeting and getting into my room for a few hours, I'm getting excited! I am teaching a combo first and second grade class again this year and will have a child for a second time, so I can't repeat some of the fun things that I do at the beginning of the year, including some of my read alouds. I have been on a hunt!
Who doesn't love Splat? Splat the Cat Back to School, Splat!, by Rob Scotton, is a great way to start your year.
Splat's sister followed along after him all summer long and they had a lot of adventures. Splat already had a homework assignment - to share something that happened during the summer, but what would Splat choose?

This next book is one that is new to me - Mark Teague's How I Spent My Summer Vacation.
Wallace Bleff is sharing his report about his summer vacation, which takes him on a westbound train, past cowboys who capture him and teach him how to rope and ride a horse. As Wallace's report continues, so does his imagination! Children will love how this story develops!

Maybe my new favorite story is Nick Ward's Don't Eat the Teacher! Perhaps because my own daughter Summer just loves sharks, too!
Poor Sammy the Shark gets excited over just about everything. And when that happens, he bites things! As they play in the classroom on the first day of school, Sammy destroys everything in the room, too.
Don't have the book? Don't worry? Check out this video!
I hope you have a great start to your school year!
